Work Study Job Position – Career Services Center

Overview of the Career Services Center in STSS
The Career Service Center (CSC) in Science Teaching and Student Service building (STSS) primarily serves students in the Career & Internship Services (CCE, CDes, CFANS – Minneapolis programs), the College of Education and Human Development, and the College of Liberal Arts. The counseling and employer relations staff focuses on the needs of their respective student and employer populations. The Twin Cities Office for Student Affairs provides oversight of administrative functions and needs – maximizing the efficient and effective coordination of the Center’s work. This position will report through Student Affairs.
The CSC serves students through individual counseling, group workshops, information sessions and course work to help clarify their interests, and assist in goal setting and career planning. In addition, the CSC features an interview suite where representatives from corporate and non-profit communities seeking to attract talented students from the University for internship and job opportunities are hosted on campus.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a first point of contact for Career Services visitors (will be cross-trained to serve both the main Career Services office as well as its Interview Center)
• Provide exceptional one-on-one support and encouragement to students visiting the resources room
• Clients include students, alumni, employers, faculty, and parents
• Direct students to the necessary resources in our office and the university at large
• Serve as receptionist for the office
• Maintain GoldPASS (U of M’s online job and internship posting system)
• Greet and direct visitors appropriately between the units served by the office; answer telephone calls, provide information and direct callers.
• Refer students to meetings with career staff members and schedule appointments
• Maintain stock of office supplies and resources needed in CSC resource room
• Other projects based on student strengths and office needs may include: writing handouts, updating web content, outreach to employers, marketing events and services, and/or assisting with events and recruiting
Qualifications
• Students must have work study funds for the 2012-2013 academic year
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Attention to detail, ability to multi-task and able to solve problems
• Friendly, customer service oriented personality
• Past experience working in an office setting
• Ability to handle confidential information
• Must have an interest in working with diverse populations in higher education setting and/or within career services
• The ideal candidate would be able to work for the next two or more academic years
Hours available?
Monday – Friday: 10-15 hours per week. The Student Office Assistant will work during peak office traffic times and coverage for lunch breaks, hours will fall during normal CSC business hours (8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday).
