Film/Episode Summary: Sam is a modern day Cinderella. Sam’s father remarried when she was young and then passed away in an earth quake, leaving her to be taken care of by Fiona, her step-mother. The film follows Sam as she tries to break free from her step-mother and create a life of her own. Along the way she meets a boy online in a chat room, who later turns out to be Austin Ames the popular quarterback at her high school. They both fall in love, and chose to pursue their dreams at Princeton together.

Comments or Recommendations for Teaching: What do you think motivated Fiona to treat Sam different from her biological children. In what ways are Fiona and Austin’s father similar?

Film/Episode Summary: Tess is a middle-aged widow getting remarried soon, and is in constant conflict with her 16-year-old daughter Anna, who is unhappy about her mom trying to replace her dad with her new fiancée, and fits the typical angsty teenager stereotype.

Comments or Recommendations for Teaching: I would use this clip to teach about conflict in a parent-child relationships, and how understanding of “the other side” aides in resolving that conflict. We think we can look at someone from the outside and know their life and know what is best for them but sometimes we understand a lot less than we think we do, and need to get very close with that person’s life to understand what they are going through.

Film/Episode Summary: The film follows 17 year-old Olive (Emma Stone) who tells her best friend a lie about losing her virginity to a guy in college. While telling her friend this, a conservative, christian girl overhears Olive and spreads the rumor throughout the school. Later, Olive confides the truth about the lie with her friend Brandon who then asks her to pretend to have sex with him so that he’ll seem straight. She agrees, and soon her promiscuous reputation grows. She embraces this new reputation because boys are giving her gift cards to say they slept with her to increase their reputation, but problems arise as this continues.

Clip Description: Olive interacts with her parents in such a healthy way. There is love, connection, humor, and support that all make their relationship work. They seem to be able to talk to each other about anything, but while simultaneously allowing each other to keep things private if they want.

Comments or Recommendations for Teaching: I would use this clip to showcase parenting that encompasses high levels of warmth and demandingness. Also, to showcase healthy communication between adolescent and parent.
