How do I share an iMovie project file?

With the aid of a laptop (PC or Mac) project files (movie projects in the iMovie app) can be shared from one iPad to another iPad so that group members can collaborate on their projects. Shared project files will include all images, video clips, and audio files.

Share project file using AirDrop

NOTE: both iPads need to be on the same wi-fi network (e.g., UM Secure) and you will need a strong signal.

  1. On both iPads (sending/receiving), enable AirDrop
    1. Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to show Control Center.
    2. Tap AirDrop.
    3. Choose Everyone (All nearby iOS devices using AirDrop can see your device.
  2. On the sending iPad open iMovie
    1. Tap the Share icon.
    2. Tap the AirDrop icon for the iPad you want to share with (it may take a few moments for this icon to appear)
  3. On the receiving iPad
    1. Tap to accept the incoming iMovie Project (it may take a few minutes or more to transfer the project)
  4. When the transfer is complete, turn off AirDrop on both iPads.

Download project file from iPad to iTunes (PC or Mac):

  1. Open iMovie on the iPad
  2. With your project in lights, tap the Share icon
  3. Tap Send Project To iTunes
  4. Connect iPad with project file to a computer (PC or MAC)
  5. Open iTunes on the computer
  6. Select iPad in the upper right menu (iTunes11 or greater) or if you are using an earlier version of iTunes select your iPad from the DEVICES menu
  7. Select Apps
  8. Under File Sharing, Select iMovie
  9. In the iMovie Documents menu click Add
  10. Your project should appear it in the iMovie Documents menu
  11. Drag your project to the desktop or click Save to
  12. In iTunes, click the eject symbol and then disconnect the iPad from the computer

Share downloaded project file to Dropbox

  1. Open a web browser on the computer
  2. Log into Dropbox
  3. Select the Upload icon
  4. Locate the file from the desktop
  5. Upload project file to Dropbox

 Share downloaded project file to Google Drive

  1. Open a web browser on the computer
  2. Log into your UMN email/Google Drive account
  3. Select the Upload icon
  4. Locate the file from the desktop
  5. Upload project file to Google Drive

Load iMovie project onto a different iPad using iTunes (PC or Mac)

  1. Download the project file you want to share to your laptop (see instructions above)
  2. Connect receiving iPad to the computer
  3. Open iTunes
  4. Select iPad (device)
  5. Select Apps
  6. Scroll down to File Sharing
  7. Click Add File.. and select the project file (downloaded earlier)
  8. On iPad, open iMovie
  9. Tap the Share icon
  10. Under Import Project from iTunes tap the project name

Upload project file from Dropbox/Google Drive(PC or Mac) to iPad

  1. Copy and paste project file from Dropbox/Google Drive to desktop
  2. Connect receiving iPad to computer
  3. Select Apps from iTunes menu on computer
  4. Click Add under iMovie Documents
  5. Select name of project
  6. On the iPad open iMovie and tap the Upload icon
  7. Under Copy from iTunes tap the name of the project
  8. Project will load into iMovie on the iPad
