iPads are designed to be “always on.” iPads can be put to sleep, or locked, when you’re not using it. When you lock an iPad, nothing happens when you touch the screen but your email will continue to download and any music will continue to play like an MP3 player. The iPad can be turned off completely. This will turn off the display, preserve battery power, and prevent unintended operation.

When completely turned off, turn the iPad on by holding down the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears onscreen.

To put an iPad to sleep, press the Sleep/Wake button

To wake up an iPad, press the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button then drag the onscreen slider.

To turn the iPad off, hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then drag the slider.

If you iPad becomes unresponsive, you may need to reset it. (Note: this does not reset any of your data):

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds. continue to hold the buttons until the Apple logo appears.
