The teaching license and the academic degree are two separate outcomes of the professional program, and there are two separate completion processes for each. License requirements are set by the State of Minnesota and students must comply with the standards in place at the time of their license application.
Undergraduate students must complete their degrees before applying for licensure. Some graduate students may be recommended for licensure after completing program requirements, but before finishing their M.Ed.
License Completion Requirements
The following are requirements for completing the program:
- Prerequisites coursework: content/major coursework (i.e., B.S. in Chemistry, B.A. in History)
- Common content (SEP) and methods/clinical coursework
- GPA Above 2.8 (individual courses above a C-)
- edTPA submission (for initial licensure candidates only)
- Clinical Hours (minimum established by program – 12 weeks full time for initial, 80 hours for additional licensure, and four weeks for middle level additional licensure)
Obtaining Your License
The license is conferred by the State of Minnesota with the University of Minnesota (through the College of Education and Human Development) providing a recommendation to Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB).
Before applying, be sure to review the process and requirements for licensure.
