Please join us for the October UMN Learning Analytics Community of Practice’s first meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year.

  • For October, the meeting will have two short presentations and then discussion of the realities of learning analytics at the University today.

Na’im Madyun, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, Diversity, and Outreach in CEHD will talk about how he has used data to help inform decisions and answer questions about student progress and success, and will share the kinds of questions and problems that are top of mind as a dean that new advances in learning analytics may be able to shed light on.

Colin DeLong, Director of Enrollment Analytics in CLA will talk about how the University of Minnesota has been piloting the use of LMS data in its early alert system (APLUS) to notify academic advisors about students who’ve gone off-track in courses relative to their peers.

The idea is simple: We’re more likely to retain students if we can identify them and reach out as soon as we’re aware they’re at risk. This talk explores the myriad challenges faced in making this a reality, including technology architecture, real-time data integration, data quality, best practices development, building and evaluating alert criteria, analytics visualization, and pilot outcomes assessment.

Note to LA CoP community:  Please let us know of UM faculty who have used analytics in Canvas or Moodle. It could be a work in progress, and they could invite feedback/support from the community. We would like to invite them to the November meeting. Thank you!

The Learning Analytics Community of Practice Meeting is open to faculty, P&A, graduate teaching assistants, staff who work with data, instructional designers, advisors, libraries–from all campuses.
